Static Pattern Engineering
From PatternSmithingAlliance
Static Pattern Engineering is a proposed extension to the field of engineering which will unify other fields of endeavor as well as expand the areas explored and inventions made by engineers in general. For hundreds of years, we have honed our understanding of the physical laws that govern phenomena in nature into mathematical constructs that could be leveraged by individuals (engineers) to bring about constructed, replicable creations in reality. Throughout the last century, our understanding of two other realms have increased in breadth and depth:
- During the last century, our understanding of the cognitive mechanisms that govern the human mind began to emerge, and…
- During the middle of the last century, we were finally able to leverage our partial grasp of those laws to create a virtual working model of those mechanisms where we could recreate, persist, and thereby automate the very products of our thoughts — this was the advent of the computer.
It is proposed that these three domains — the physical, cognitive, and virtual realms — consist of underlying patterns that lie across and between these three domains. A new branch of engineering that concerned itself with these underlying patterns would ultimately enrich all other branches of engineering. This new branch of engineering would operate with and on these patterns in their abstracted form (apart from their domain of manifestation) and transform them within and cross the respective domains (i.e., physical, virtual, and cognitive) to bring about constructed, replicable creations that span or cycle through these three domains as they evolve. The new branch of engineering would be called Static Pattern Engineering.
Static Pattern Engineering attempts to establish general principles, discover laws and constructs that govern these patterns, catalog the patterns, and to ultimately model the complex sequence of patterns going through genesis and folding back into an underlying order. While it is engaged in these weightier matters (so that the field can continue to evolve and grow over the next few centuries), it is believed that people can begin applying discoveries and principles to vocational challenges at this very moment. This is where PatternSmithing comes into focus - just as the first blacksmiths, tinsmiths, and brightsmiths used the discoveries of the new metals formed by human inventiveness to forge new creations, it is proposed that patternsmiths can likewise forge new creations or find a better process for forging new creations using the discoveries of the field of Static Pattern Engineering.
It was once said that an artist wasn't a special kind of person but that every person could be viewed as a special kind of artist -- in the same light, equipped with the proper tools and mechanisms, every person can be viewed as a special kind of pattern smith - we only differ in which patterns we are capable of forging with the most effectiveness.
